Japan confirms 13 more flu cases; total domestic cases rise to 21

A total of 13 students from a high school in Osaka Prefecture and one in Hyogo Prefecture were confirmed to have been infected with the new strain of influenza A, the health ministry and local authorities said Sunday, bringing the total number of domestic infections in Japan to 21 in the two prefectures.

Temperatures soar to year's highest in various parts of Japan

Temperatures soared to the highest figures so far this year in various regions across the Japanese archipelago Sunday, with the mercury rising to 30 C or above in places such as parts of Miyazaki, Hiroshima, Gunma and Ibaraki prefectures. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, temperatures climbed as high as 33.9 C in the village of Nishimera in Miyazaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan, and in the town of Nakanojo in Gunma Prefecture, eastern Japan, to mark the highest of the day.

Increasing number of patients with fever rejected by Tokyo hospitals

An increasing number of patients with fever have been rejected by hospitals in Tokyo even though their risk of being infected with a new type of influenza is low, given that they have never been to any of the countries affected by the new flu, a Tokyo metropolitan government survey showed Tuesday. The number of cases in which Tokyo hospitals refused medical examinations for such patients totaled 92 from Saturday morning to Tuesday noon, according to the survey.

Aso calls for world effort to abolish nukes

Prime Minister Taro Aso on Monday called for a unified international effort in pushing for nuclear nonproliferation, saying recent activities in China and North Korea were threatening security in the Asian region.

Japan's child population falls to record low

The number of children aged under 15 is estimated to have totaled 17.14 million in Japan as of April 1, marking a record low for the 28th straight year due to the declining birthrate, according to a government report released Monday. The report by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, released a day ahead of the Children’s Day national holiday in Japan, showed that children’s share of the population was 13.4%, declining for the 35th consecutive year.
